Scouting and planning a landscape image often looks flawless on paper, but actual field conditions dictate what you bring home. This Royal Gorge photography story starts with a plan to shoot a full moon alignment, but turned into a lesson on adapting when variables on the ground don’t match up with a phone app.
Scouting for a Royal Gorge Photography Story
The initial objective for this trip was to align the setting Full Buck Moon directly behind historical structures along the gorge around 4:00 AM. After hitting the road in the camper van—finally back in commission after nine weeks in the shop—my two sons and I made the drive out to set up basecamp.
Getting into position around midnight, the moon was so bright it was lighting up the entire canyon floor and creating dramatic, high-contrast shadows across the landscape. However, once on-site and checking the horizon line against the topography, it became clear the moon’s trajectory was going to fall well outside the intended frame.
Instead of forcing a shot that wasn’t there, the focus shifted to documenting the surrounding valley and the dramatic play of light across the terrain. Early Morning Rim Hike: A Royal Gorge Photography Story
By the early morning hours, as the moonlight faded into pre-dawn light, my youngest son hiked out with me to scout the rim overlooks. While my oldest opted to catch up on sleep in the van, having a partner willing to head out at 3:00 AM makes managing gear and scouting edges much easier.
We set up along a high overlook featuring sweeping views down into the canyon where the Arkansas River cuts through the rock. The early morning twilight provided a soft fill light across the canyon walls, contrasting with the river far below.
While the trip didn’t yield the exact historical alignment originally planned, every Royal Gorge photography story is a balance of preparation and adaptation. Capturing dynamic light over one of Colorado’s most prominent river corridors—and spending that time out on the trail with family—made the trip a total success.
