We’ve all been there. You hike out to an incredible alpine vista, the timing is perfect, and the energy is high. It’s peak golden hour, right at sunrise or sunset. But the specific composition you want forces you to shoot directly into the horizon, right toward the low-angled sun. Even though you waited for the perfect time of day, that direct, blinding light completely backlights the scene, turning your beautiful foreground subject into a solid black silhouette.
Years ago, in the DSLR days—or shooting film—you’d look at that extreme contrast and know the shot was nearly impossible to balance. You’d pack up your gear, check your compass, and plan a return trip to find an angle where the light actually worked with the landscape.
But today? Today we are living through a phenomenal mirrorless evolution.
With the staggering high dynamic range of modern sensors, there is a tempting voice in our heads that whispers: “Just shoot it anyway. Protect the highlights in the sky, let the subject go completely black, and rescue the rest in post-production later.”
It is an incredible technical superpower, and the engineering behind it is nothing short of revolutionary. But after putting this exact method to the test on countless trails, I’ve finally come to a definitive conclusion:
Just because modern technology allows us to force a difficult exposure, doesn’t mean we should. The best way to capture fine art imagery is still the traditional way—positioning yourself so the sunrise or sunset is at your back.
The Illusion of the Digital Safety Net
Don’t get me wrong; the physics under the hood of a modern mirrorless camera are a massive asset for any photographer tackling shooting into the sun photography. If you are pointing your lens directly into the glow of a rising sun breaking over the peaks, or a sunset dipping below the horizon, you can purposely underexpose the image so that the rich, dramatic colors of the sky aren’t blown out into a sea of empty white data.
On your camera’s LCD screen, your landscape looks like an unrecoverable silhouette. But back at the computer, the heavy manipulation begins.
To rescue the shot, you slide that Shadow slider up by three or four stops to reveal the dark foreground. But because the sky is now incredibly bright by comparison, you have to counter-manipulate the background by slamming the Highlight slider all the way down in Lightroom.
When you push a RAW file that hard—actively pulling and pushing the data in opposite directions—it comes with a steep creative tax:

- The Noise Penalty vs. Post-Processing Rescue: Pulling details out of deep, underexposed shadows inevitably introduces digital artifacts and noise. Now, to be fair, modern software has come an incredibly long way. You can run the file through modern AI De-Noise tools or dedicated third-party cleanup plugins to clean up the grain, and they do a spectacular job of saving the file.
But even with a perfectly de-noised file and a carefully managed halo, you are still missing the single most important element of professional fine art photography: true, natural illuminance.
Mastering Light: The Alternative to Shooting Into the Sun
Technology can map data and clean up grain, but it cannot invent the soul of directional light. There’s an old, timeless saying in our industry that photographers are “light chasers.” A true light chaser knows that our job isn’t just to find a beautiful canyon or a magnificent mountain, but to chase the specific illumination that brings that subject to life.
When you take the time to map a location in Colorado, track the solar path, and position yourself so that the sunrise or sunset is hitting from behind you, you don’t have to manipulate anything. You are working with the light you chased.
1. Organic Illuminance and Soft Shadows
Low-angled golden light striking a landscape from behind your shoulder paints your scene natively. It creates a gorgeous, glowing illuminance across the terrain, accompanied by soft, wrap-around shadows. This creates deep, three-dimensional contrast and micro-texture on a granite face or an aspen grove that a shadow slider can never artificially replicate on a flat silhouette.
2. The Magic of Reflected Light
When the sun is behind you, you get to witness the sky in front of you interacting beautifully with the atmosphere. You catch the rich, warm alpenglow painting the high summits and the vibrant colors illuminating off the clouds. The sky acts as a massive, natural softbox, balancing the exposure across your entire frame beautifully without a single digital artifact.
3. A Pristine, Unprocessed File
Because the landscape is naturally illuminated, your histogram is balanced right out of the camera. Your shadows stay clean, your midtones are rich, and your file remains un-punished by extreme slider adjustments. Your job in post-production shifts from rescuing data to simply enhancing mood.
The Veteran’s Takeaway: Slow Down and Position for the Light
The phenomenal evolution of mirrorless technology has given us a safety net that past generations of photographers could only dream of. It’s a brilliant tool to have in your back pocket when unexpected field conditions leave you with fewer options.
But a safety net shouldn’t become a crutch. It shouldn’t tempt us into forcing the artistic process through heavy post-production manipulation, instead of slowing down and allowing the natural artistry of our subject to emerge. Digital sliders can change exposure values, but they can never replicate the breathtaking elegance of a landscape naturally kissed by the sun.
As light chasers, the next time you find yourself trying to force a difficult shot into a blinding sunrise just because your sensor can technically pull the details out of the dark, challenge yourself to stop. Look around. Look at what the light is doing behind you. Sometimes, the real magic isn’t found by staring directly into the sun, but by turning around and capturing exactly what it’s painting.
