Dancing Aspens in Ophir

How to Photograph Dancing Aspens in Ophir, Colorado

Plan your photography trip around the distinct visual pattern created by the sweeping J-curve trunks at the base of this grove. Rather than isolating a single tree, frame a wider perspective that incorporates multiple curved bases across the forest floor. The lower trunk bend was formed by historic snowslides creeping down the slope, pushing the young saplings downhill before they curved vertically back toward the sunlight.

To photograph this specific perspective, position your camera low to the ground to emphasize the horizontal sweep of the trunk bases where they meet the forest floor. The dense arrangement of surrounding straight aspens creates a tight repeating background, making depth of field management critical. Executing a focus stack ensures crisp detail across the dark, textured bark in the immediate foreground all the way up through the bright autumn canopy in the upper frame.
